From the Pastor
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” (Col 3:12)
I read this passage again the other morning and I was struck by the simplicity of it. We tend to make our faith really complicated, or at least I know I do, but this passage is profoundly simple and transformative at the same time.
It tells me who I am and where I belong.
I am a child of God chosen by him: I’ve been adopted into the people of God with 5000 plus years of continuous history and all that means. I have brothers and sisters all over the world. I have family no matter where I go. I have an eternal and joyous future. It doesn’t matter what others think of me, God thinks enough of me to adopt me; I am holy and dearly loved. I am set apart to serve the kingdom of God. I am deeply loved by God. I belong with him and his people. It doesn’t matter what other people think of me. It doesn’t matter if this world doesn’t value me. I am loved by God and belong to his kingdom.
It also tells me what I should be doing.
Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. It doesn’t matter much what I do during my waking hours it matters how I do it. If I am growing in compassion, kindness, humility etc. then I am doing the right things. I am becoming more like Jesus and representing the family. I am fulfilling my role as a child of the living God.
Remember, you are a child of God.
Remember, be like Jesus.
Simple yet profound!
